There
are many beautiful walks in the surrounding areas. Robert Burns and his
lassies enjoyed many of these such as the Afton Water and the Failford gorge.

Here are a few examples:

Loudoun Hill
Scene of some of
the most significant battles in Scotland's history this volcanic
outcrop is only 25 minutes away from Mauchline. This was the location
of important battles fought by both William Wallace and Robert
the Bruce in the 13th and 14th centuries. A short energetic walk will
take you to the top where you will be greeted by spectacular views of
the Irvine valley.
William Wallace is reputed to have raised his fighting force for his battle at
Mauchline.
Other walks such as those through the Galloway Forest, Auchincruive and the
Stinchar valley are only a short drive away.
Lost Railway Walks
Local expert, Dr Alasdair Wham, has written comprehensive guides to walking the old
railways in the area.
(Some interesting local railway records:
- Laigh Milton Viaduct; probably the world's oldest surviving railway
viaduct, ca 1810.
(Laigh Milton viaduct no longer carries a line. It has recently been restored and
may be crossed on foot.)
- Ballochmyle Viaduct, reputedly the highest viaduct in Britain at 169
feet and the central span the world's longest masonry span at 181 feet.
(The Ballochmyle viaduct, just south of Mauchline, is still in use located on the
line between Kilmarnock and Dumfries.)
