Castles

Culzean Castle, the holiday residence of President Eisenhower. Open from April to October with admission charges for castle and park. The beautiful 18th -century castle designed by Robert Adam has many interesting features including an Eisenhower exhibition. Culzean was Scotland's first country park and has been described as 'the most magnificent in Britain'. it sits on the Clyde Coast with stunning views of Arran and the Ailsa Craig. The park has walks, visitor centres, adventure play areas and guests can enter the impressive castle.

Ayrshire is littered with castles and historic buildings. Those listed below, have been turned into visitor attractions:

Royal Dundonald Castle

Billed as Ayrshire's best kept Royal secret this recently renovated site is one the best tourist attractions in the area. Built by Robert Stewart in the 14th century it sits on the sites of previous fortified buildings going back to before 2000BC. The main tower of the castle can be entered giving stunning views from the top. A newly built visitor centre outlines the impressive history of the site. link off-site

Dean Castle

On the outskirts of Kilmarnock, Dean Castle is a medieval square keep with some later additions. There is an interesting collection of armour including one of William Wallace's swords. For musical instrument enthusiasts, there is an important collection of early instruments. link off-site

Loudoun Castle and Theme Park

Loudoun Castle is situated just outside Galston, a village a few miles to the North-East of Mauchline. The present castle dates, principally, from the 18th century with part of the structure having been built in the 1400's.

Presented in the context of a theme park, there are various fairground rides, a farm, displays of birds of prey and other live shows. link off-site
